Hi, My Name is Alex Chadwick. I want to tell you about Burn: An Energy Journal. It’s a new series from The Public Radio Energy Project and you are invited. We’ll share stories of Energy, Cars, Gasoline, Oil, Hybrids, Climate Change, Nuclear Power, Light Bulbs, Windmills, Bicycles, Skateboards, Kites and anything else that comes to mind. Click the reply button at the bottom of this page and join the community of Energy storytellers. I’ll go first.
Why I’m following Energy
I’ve been a public radio reporter, producer and show developer for many years. I helped create Morning Edition, was chief correspondent for NPR’s long-running National Geographic Radio Expeditions series, and probably hosted every NPR program at one time or another. Eventually, however, I had to confront a basic question: who am I as a reporter…what’s my beat?
Energy attracts me as one of the most fundamental questions for all of us over the coming decades. It is enormously complex, difficult and divisive – globally, nationally and personally. There are huge questions of money and power (both senses of power); and, these days, energy includes the perils of climate change. A former Obama Administration Energy official recently told me that even she sometimes feels overwhelmed – not just by the difficulties of finding answers, but by the passions and anger that get aroused. It actually starts to feel dangerous.
The answers are going to matter to all of us, and we’ll be arguing with one another about what to do for a long time to come. I’ll be the guy in the back of the room taking notes – me, or one of the other reporters you’ll find here. If you’ve got something to say, come on by.
